TWF announces 2000 Scholarship Winners
WILLIAM & MARCELLA POWELL SCHOLARSHIP William and Marcella Powell became the first African-Americans to design, own and operate a golf course in the U.S. In honor of their pioneering spirit, the William & Marcella Powell Scholarship Award is given annually to two graduating seniors at Minerva High School in Ohio who have overcome significant challenges while achieving academic excellence. This year's winners are Jessica Farber and Brandi Reed. Both will attend Kent State University. ALFRED "TUP" HOLMES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Alfred "Tup" Holmes Memorial Scholarship Award was established by the Tiger Woods Foundation to honor the civil-rights pioneer who paved the way for desegregating Atlanta's public golf courses in the 1950s. This year's winner, Stephen James of North Atlanta High School in Atlanta, will attend the Georgia Institute of Technology. THE NATIONAL MINORITY JUNIOR GOLF SCHOLARSHIP The National Minority Junior Golf Scholarship Association/Tiger Woods Foundation Scholarships will benefit five minority golfers attending college in 2000. Each scholarship awarded is worth $2,000. This year's winners are: Stephen Reed of Houston, Tex. (Texas A&M); Alexis Arnold of Los Angeles, Calif. (Cal State-Northridge); Sonny Rodriguez of Corpus Christi, Tex. (Texas A&M); Shaun McEwen of Phoenix, Ariz. (Florida A&M); and Fred Spence, Jr. of Sarasota, Fla. (Florida A&M).
