| The Masters - final round |

Mark O'Meara is presented with the green jacket by Tiger Woods after winning the 1998 Masters Championship with a birdie putt on the 18th.

O'Meara wins Masters on final hole
AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) Mark O'Meara rolled in a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole to claim the Masters title that his close friend Tiger Woods overwhelmed a year ago, but not before the greatest master of them all - Jack Nicklaus - thrilled the massive gallery with one more run at a seventh green
jacket.
O'Meara, 41, had played in 56 major championships without winning, but when that streak ended Sunday at Augusta National Golf Club he thrust his arms
defiantly into the air and then wrapped them around caddie Jerry Higgenbothem.
The birdie on No. 18 marked the only time O'Meara led during the four days of play.
The tournament appeared headed for a playoff when David Duval, playing in the group in front of O'Meara, missed a 20-foot birdie try on the final hole to
finish at 8-under-par 280.

Couples takes two-stroke lead at Masters
AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) The angry wind that shouted through the towering Georgia pines for two days, as if upset by the way Tiger Woods dominated last year,
lowered its voice Saturday and the players lowered their scores at the Masters
- except for Woods.
Player after player moved into the red numbers, led by Fred Couples, whose
bold iron from 204 yards on No. 13 for a near-gimme eagle helped the 1992
Masters winner shoot a 71 to be at 6-under-par 210, two strokes ahead of Phil
Mickelson, Paul Azinger and Mark O'Meara.
"I made a few mistakes, but I started the day tied for the lead with David
Duval. Now I'm two ahead of whoever," Couples said. "There are a lot more
guys in there. I can't go out and maybe shoot the same score I did today and
win."
With the wind still swirling but with considerably less force, many made
moves on Move Day at the Masters, including O'Meara, who shot a 68, and Azinger
and Mickelson, who both turned in a scorecard with a 69.

Couples, Duval leading, but Tiger is lurking at Augusta
AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) When he won the Masters in record fashion last year,
Tiger Woods took 40 shots on the first nine holes, made a minor swing
adjustment on the 10th tee and left the field behind.
On Friday, he was simply trying to stay in the hunt.
At the end of another day filled with missed greens and missed
opportunities, Woods stared at a 15-foot par-saving putt on the 18th hole, one
that broke three inches to the right and then an inch back to the left.
"I made some mistakes earlier and I didn't want to have another bogey,"
Woods said. "I felt I needed to make that putt and finish even for the day."
Ahead of him in the clubhouse was David Duval, who put on a Tiger-like
birdie blitz on the back nine for a 68 that put him at 5-under-par 139.

Couples leads with 69; Tiger and Fuzzy together for round 2
AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) Tiger Woods didn't want to play a practice round at the
Masters with Fuzzy Zoeller for fear it would turn into a circus as he prepared
to win a championship. He may not have a choice today.
Never mind that Fred Couples was the only player who managed to break 70 on
a day when his 3-under-par 69 felt much lower. Or that the wind was so strong
it blew sand out of the bunkers, made it a chore for players to stand over a
2-foot putt and eliminated all the talk about making Augusta National
"Tiger-proof."
Woods and Zoeller - one remembered for his runaway victory last year, the
other for his racially charged remarks that followed - were grouped together at
1-under 71 and all but certain to be paired today in the second round.
"Just another pairing," Woods shrugged.
It wouldn't be finalized until the first round, suspended by darkness
Thursday with 10 players still on the course, is completed today. Nick Faldo
was 1 over, while U.S. Open champion Ernie Els was 3 over with three to play.
