The Anderson & Hester/Seattle Times College Football Computer Rankings

BCS Logo CBS SportsLine is the exclusive national media outlet for The Anderson & Hester/Seattle Times Rankings, one of the three major computer indexes used in the new Bowl Championship Series poll.

Every Monday throughout the 1998 college football season, CBS SportsLine will present the complete rankings of all 112 Division I-A teams. The rankings utilize won-lost records and strength-of-schedule ratings to compute teams' numerical ratings.

The Anderson & Hester/Seattle Times Rankings are distinct in four ways:

  1. They compute the most accurate strength-of-schedule ratings. Each team's opponents and opponents' opponents are judged not only by their records but also by their conferences' strength.
  2. They rank teams solely upon success in defeating quality opponents, rather than upon margins of victory.
  3. By debuting after the season's fifth week, they reward actual accomplishments, not perceived potential.
  4. They provide the most accurate conference ratings. Each conference is rated according to its out-of-conference record and the difficulty of its out-of-conference schedule.
