Big athletic middle linebacker completed a fine career as one of the key components in the Penn St. dominant defense. Short is a fine athlete who combines size, speed and hitting power to become a quality pro defender after starting for four seasons in Happy Valley.

He has the speed to cover the entire field and has the ability to be an every down defender. He shows a good drop in coverage, with the lateral quickness to match up in coverage. As a senior, he made 103 tackles with 12 TFLs, 4 sacks, 1 interception and 1 FR. He totaled six double digit tackle games in '99 which included the last 4 games. He has excellent functional strength and combined with quick footwork and lateral movement has allowed him to be one of the best playmakers at the position.

He started as a redshirt freshman on the outside and displayed the playmaking skills to be another in a long line of great Penn St. linebackers. As a freshman, he made 48 tackles and gave a glimpse of his big play ability when he recorded 12 TFLs and 3.5 sacks. He has coupled with LaVar Arrington to form the most dominant 1-2 punch of linebackers in college football over the past few seasons.

He is a huge athlete for the position and carries the blue chip label as a linebacker. He is a powerful tackler who stops runners dead in their tracks with powerful hits. He does need work as a run stuffer at the point of attack, getting better use of his hands and leverage technique to take on blockers between the tackles. He can make poor decisions that can leave him out of position especially on the inside.

He has rare athleticism for the position, combining huge size and fine speed that has allowed him to make 51 TFLs during his career, second only to Courtney Brown in Penn St. history. He may be best suited for the strong side but has the versatile skills to play both inside and outside and is very similar to Randall Godfrey in many ways.

During the '98 season, he recorded 67 tackles with 15 TFLs, 5.5 sacks and 1 interception and faced a critical decision concerning turning pro but decided to return to attain several new goals. He needs to get stronger in his lower body to fight off blockers on the inside in addition to better understanding of technique and positioning.

His combination of size, speed and quickness would rank him in the top five outside linebackers where his big play ability and pass rushing skills could be maximized as blitzer. Tough physical blue chip defender and top 40 player with an early starting grade as a pro with the versatility to start both inside and outside. Excellent 2nd round pick.
