leading the nation in interceptions during his final season. Grant is a very athletic defender with outstanding ball hawking skills. He has tremendous range and with a very quick break on the ball, to be the ideal free safety prospect. He has excellent hands which has allowed him to intercept 14 passes as a sophomore and junior with a nation leading 9 this past season.
In '99, he made 69 tackles with 9 picks, 8 PBUs and 1 FC earning first team All-SEC honors. Though it was a fine performance, he left some scouts disappointed with his poor tackling throughout the season. He fails to wrap up consistently and misses some critical easy tackles, that a free safety has to make. He is a two-way athlete who has played some wideout during his career.
He has the outstanding change of direction skills and the burst to the ball to be a top cornerback. His size, athleticism and speed is similar to former Vol defender, Dale Carter who has gone on to Pro Bowl status in the NFL. He is the best corner in this draft class with the size, quickness, cover skills, instincts and recovery speed to match up with the big receivers.
His poor March workout when he ran a 4.6 time hurt his cause, though he is scheduled for a late workout in hopes of an expected sub 4.5 time. He leaped an impressive 41.5", at the workout, which equaled the best at the NFL combine. He does possess the critical recovery speed necessary to match up with fast receivers.
He has outstanding ball awareness skills with the agility and size to break up plays. He has been a big play performer since his arrival in Knoxville as both a safety and special teams defender. He has excellent ball instincts with the ability to gamble and make the big turnover.
As a sophomore, he made 62 tackles with 2 FR, 6 PBUs and 5 interceptions including a key one against Florida. He earned first team SEC honors for his efforts when he gained recognition as the best defensive back in the nation entering the '99 season. He has excellent footwork in coverage, showing a fast backpedal and a super quick break on the ball.
He has the tools to be a top man-to-man corner or free safety with the ability to match up with the slot receiver. He combines excellent range, ball reactions, instincts and agility to be a top NFL corner or free safety with most clubs looking at him first at cornerback. He needs work on his tackling from a technique standpoint and needs to show more toughness in that role. His game is finesse for the most part and he will have to show the power and strength to deliver a hit to become a consistent tackler before he sees starting time in the NFL.
This guy is one of the blue chip athletes in this draft but his stock has fallen off a weak workout and some weak tackling in his final season. It has most likely cost him a top ten selection but not a 1st round grade. He possesses Pro-bowl ability with all the skills needed to be a completed defender. He will get strong consideration by the Jets, Raiders and Seahawks in the mid-1st round and most likely a look at corner in training camp. He has the skills to be one of the best in the game at either position with the critical improvement in tackling.
