Rangy inside linebacker has been one of the most productive defenders in the ACC over his career when healthy. Lyman has battled back from a knee injury that cost him time at the end of his junior and the beginning of his senior seasons.
He has been a consistent performer in all areas and shows the ability to be an every down defender in the right scheme. In '99, he returned from knee surgery but re-injured the knee in late summer camp, which cost him the first two games of his senior season. He did start the rest of the year and recorded 56 tackles, 7 TFLs, 2 sacks, 2 FR, 1 FC and 4 PBUs and was instrumental in the Deacons bowl winning season.
He has a big frame with long arms and keeps blockers off his body. He shows quick hands to sift through traffic and the speed to go sideline to sideline. He has excellent instincts with quick diagnostic skills and reactions to get to the hole to defeat blocking angles.
As a junior in '98, he started five games before season ending knee injury that required surgery. He totaled 62 tackles 5 TFLs and 1 sack for the season and was on his way to a big effort until going down. He had a breakout sophomore season in '97, started every game and made 91 tackles, 57 solo hits, 9 TFLs, 7 sacks, 8 PBUs and 1 interception.
He is a sturdy athlete who runs well and shows the athleticism, instincts and toughness to be a starting pro linebacker. He has nice mobility with the speed to drop in coverage and change of direction skills to handle tight ends in man situations. He lacks bulk and can have problems at the point of attack shedding blockers. He is more effective on the move where his speed, range and quickness allow him to make plays.
At the East-West Shrine game, he displayed good movement skills along the line and the ability to drop in coverage. At the combine, he ran a 4.72 time with a 35" vertical leap and a 9'10" broad jump. He did 22 reps in the lifting and was the quickest inside backer in the agility drills.
Tough competitive defender with the intangibles and intensity to be a fine starter in time. His tackling skills and speed will allow him to be an instant top special teams performer. Quality middle round pick with starting potential.
