The left tackle completed a fine three-year career as a starter in a run
and shoot offense. Chustz has developed nicely as a pass protector playing
in the wide-open passing game, directed by quarterback Tim Rattay. He is a
tall tackle with a huge wingspan, which he has learned to use well, forcing
pass rushers to take a wide rush. He gained extensive experience in pass
protection in an offense that has thrown over 1,500 times during his
career. He understands positioning and angles and combines that with his
massive size to stay between the rusher and his passer. He starts with a
crouched two-point stance, which allows him to gain sound positioning
quickly to battle the outside rush. He has good functional strength that,
when combined with his sturdy base, has allowed him to stop bull rushers in
their tracks.
He will have to go through an adjustment to the three- point stance in the
pro ranks. He'll also need to improve his footwork and adjust some of his
techniques. He is not a natural knee bender and is a limited athlete from a
standpoint of footwork or explosiveness. He can mirror a pass rusher with
the ability to slide outside but he can struggle readjusting to counter
moves, to the inside.
He blocks high in run support and needs definite work on his technique and
footwork.
Although he lacks the athleticism to excel at left tackle as a pro, his
skills dictate that he is better suited for the right side. Interesting
project at either tackle or guard, though he warrants only a late grade.
Quality late pick with the tools to start in time with some upside.
