This strong punishing tailback completed an outstanding career as the leading scorer in college football history and earned MAC Player of the Year honors in 1998. He scored 78 TDs over his career as a runner and receiver, setting new NCAA records in both categories. He finished with a tremendous senior performance that included 1,657 yards rushing on 354 attempts for 17 TDs and 19 receptions for 270 yard and 4 TDs.
During his final season, he broke several of Ricky William's records, both total TDs (78) and rushing TDs (73). He is a chiseled athlete who is a strong runner, with very good acceleration through a hole and the power to run over defenders. He combines quickness, vision, body control and strength to be a top pro feature back. He is a powerfully built runner, with a very strong lower body, quick feet and the speed to get outside and break the play. He is one of the toughest runners in the nation between the tackles with the power to take on any defender and make yardage after contact.
He has been a very durable runner over his career with over 1,100 total carries and over 350 attempts during both his junior and senior seasons. With over 1,100 attempts, he fumbled only two times, an amazing number when one considers the amount of action and the fact that he ran inside regularly. He makes a tremendous amount of his yardage after contact and is among the best backs over the past decade at finishing his runs.
As a junior, he rushed for 1,787 yards on 365 carries for 19 TDs with 11 receptions for 101 yards and 1 TD. He has fine speed for a back over 225 lbs. and has been timed under 4.4 on a fast track and regularly runs in the 4.45 range. He combines imposing size, fine speed and the toughness and durability to be one of this year's most complete backs. As a receiver, he has caught 54 career passes, showing reliable hands when used in that role. He needs work in his route running and needs better understanding of adjustments in patterns.
At the Senior Bowl practices he displayed fine hands with the ability to make the difficult catch and the running skills to be a freight train in the open field. He was quick to the hole, displaying the power to move the pile and the make yardage after contact.
As a blocker he needs extensive work and was rarely used in that role as a collegian. He fails to pick up the blitz quickly and must show fast development in that area if he expects to see action as a rookie. He has both the toughness and ability to block, he just needs technique work and reps to develop in that critical area.
He is a tough, aggressive north-south runner with the intangibles to be a solid feature runner and a quality starter, although he stills needs to improve his receiving and blocking skills. He’s a fine prospect with size, speed, durability and ball security to be a feature runner. Good second-round pick with the talent to be a fine pro.
