The American Football League

(Pro Football Hall of Fame)
It's been 30 years since the American Football League champion Kansas City Chiefs put their league on equal footing with the established NFL by defeating the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. This season SportsLine will take an indepth look at the best players and coaches as well as the great teams and memorable games of the AFL.
The eight original AFL owners, who were tabbed, "The Foolish Club," gave football fans a game with wide-open, exciting offenses and high scoring games. The senior league, meanwhile, was known for vicious defenses, conservative offenses and a growing reputation as the "No Fun League." Clear-cut wins by the New York Jets and Chiefs in Super Bowls III and IV, respectively, evened the tab at two wins apiece between the two leagues. By the time of the 1970 merger, the AFL was clearly as good as the NFL.
