| Outlook | Coming off a disastrous 1999 campaign (7-25),
new head coach Octavio
Zambrano jettisoned an unhappy Hurtado, Colombian
Henry Zambrano, and defenders Mahammed
Khakpour and Mike DuHaney. Headline signings
included German legend Lothar Matthaeus, his German buddy Thomas
Dooley, top draft choice
Steve Shak, Colombian Alex Comas and Colombian Adolfo Valencia.
The acquisition of Valencia could help them do some
damage if he can find the form, at 31, which propelled him to
success in Europe and the World Cup stage.
The team as a whole is still excruciatingly mediocre. A backline of the ancient
Germans, an unproven Shak and Mark Semioli looks bleak.
Perennially-injured Tab Ramos along with top returning scorer Mark Chung will spearhead the
midfield.
Comas will be put in the playmaker's role, but it will be Valencia who will
determine the success of the attack. Note: How many Colombians have the
Metros gone through anyway?
Despite the hype, it will be another disappointing year for the MetroStars. |
