BESSEMER, Ala. (AP) A judge dismissed bad check charges against former Alabama quarterback Brian Burgdorf on Monday after deciding he did not criminally intend to write the checks.

Burgdorf, 29, was arrested in July after he failed to appear in court to face charges that he wrote bad checks, including one for $15,000. But Burgdorf paid more than $17,000 in fines and restitution, satisfying Bessemer Cutoff District Judge Eric Fancher, defense attorney Ron Marlow said.

"We're through," Marlow told The Birmingham News. "He did everything he was asked to do, so that was it."

Burgdorf's legal troubles are not over, however. A similar bad check case is pending in Birmingham, and he was named in a civil suit that accuses him and two others of running an investment scam.

A native of Cedartown, Ga., and an All-America quarterback in high school, Burgdorf spent three seasons as a backup to Jay Barker at Alabama and was part of the Crimson Tide's 1992 national championship team.

As a sophomore, Burgdorf led the Crimson Tide to a 24-10 victory over North Carolina in the Gator Bowl after Barker was injured and missed the end of the season. Burgdorf ran for one touchdown and threw for two in the game.

Two years later, as a senior, he opened the season at quarterback and led Alabama in passing but eventually lost his job to Freddie Kitchens.
